What is a dry cough?

A cough is a non-productive live cough, and no mucus or phlegm is produced.

What are the symptoms of a dry cough?

  • A dry cough doesn't expel any mucus or phlegm from your throat or airways
  • A dry, hacking cough can be irritating, and when you experience this type of cough it can leave your chest muscles arching

What causes a dry cough?

  • Dry coughs are often caused by viral illnesses such as cold and flu
  • Some other causes include allergies, or from inhaling dust or smoke
